YOKO REIJN

Yoko chooses to work in an abstract fashion, in an attempt to communicate in a direct, non-intellectual manner.

Colour is her medium. It is very personal and individually loaded with feelings, triggering memories and sensations.

Her organic and fluid shapes refer to the interconnection and oneness of all aspects of life.

Yoko is a dutch painter currently living in Porterville and since 2012 she is exhibiting at South-African galleries, participating in group exhibitions and art events.

GUEST OF JAN VINGERHOETS (Artist #19)

@Foxglove Farm (91 Olienhoutlaan)

SUE VINGERHOETS

Sue Vingerhoets has a background in architecture and design. She is now an organic farmer and heirloom seed grower.

Following on from the "endangered human traits" series, I have been delving into what is important in human relationships.

Kindness.

Kindness to self.

Kindness to family, friends, community, planet.

Kindness in words and deeds, but may our actions speak louder than our words. For the planet, communities, friends, families, and ultimately, ourselves as passengers of time. For what can be more important than to start with kindness?

Let good things manifest from the kindness with which we begin.

In keeping with Foxglove Farm's ethos of zero waste, I have used reclaimed paint,
inks, boards, canvases, fabrics and threads, all destined for landfill. Carving stamps, cutting paper, printing, sewing, embroidering, painting- mark making in many forms allows for varied ways to express the theme of kindness.

HENDRICUS RABIE

Hendricus is a retired production potter who now creates sculptural work in the modern material called Jesmonite, an acrylic resin, which allows the sculptor to control the full process of creation, from the master original, through the mould-making right to the eventual completed piece. He also enjoys the challenge of using a recalcitrant material like reinforced concrete to express fluid natural form or subtle emotion.

Hendricus and his wife, Jomien, started the Overberg’s first pottery studio inStanford on the 1st of May 1978. They started the first Craft Market in 1985 with asmall group of fellow potters and artists in Hermanus. Their pottery business flourished after they moved to a smallholding about 35 km from B'bos in 1983, where they produced production majolica ware for the next 20 years.

The work being exhibited by Hendricus is largely retrospective as he has been selling sculptural pieces almost exclusively by private commissions since about 2008.

CLAIRE GUNN

Cape Town multi-media artist and commercial food photographer Claire Gunn began her career working in kitchens and today is South Africa’s foremost documentary photographer working in that industry.

Known for capturing the nuance and theatre of hospitality by some of the biggest names in fine dining, eventing and luxury travel, Claire relentlessly seeks out new ways to express herself as a creative being. Despite a busy professional schedule, she deliberately carved out time and space for herself to explore painting.

Curious about technique and form, her scope of work includes landscapes, street scenes and architecture. There are some Japanese inspired decorative works, still-life realism, abstract ocean imagery, even children's illustrations scattered around her studio.

Working in mediums including oils, inks, acrylics, and even digital art Claire finds endless inspiration in her environment and in her very active dream world.

RESIDENT GUEST ARTIST

Community Centre, Main Rd

LIZ VAN DEN BERG

"Gyotaku, a traditional Japanese art form, has always captivated me with its unique blend of technique, creativity, and culture. This art form involves using ink to transfer an impression of a fish onto paper or fabric, resulting in a strikingly realistic image that captures the essence of the fish's form and texture.

My passion for Gyotaku stems from its ability to merge the worlds of art and nature, and its power to communicate the beauty and diversity of aquatic life. Through Gyotaku, I aim to showcase the intricacy and complexity of marine ecosystems, and highlight the importance of preserving them for future generations.

Creating Gyotaku requires both precision and spontaneity, as I work quickly to capture the impression of the fish before it begins to deteriorate. This process demands patience, focus, and a deep understanding of the fish's anatomy and behavior. By immersing myself in this art form, I have developed a profound appreciation for the natural world and its ability to inspire us in unexpected ways.

Ultimately, my goal as a Gyotaku artist is to create art that not only captures the beauty of aquatic life, but also raises awareness of environmental issues and inspires viewers to take action. Through my art, I hope to foster a greater sense of connection to the natural world and encourage people to become stewards of the planet.

In addition to Gyotaku, I am also inspired by the Japanese concept of mono no aware, which emphasizes the impermanence and transience of all things. Through my art, I seek to explore the delicate balance between the enduring beauty of nature and the fleeting nature of life itself."

GUEST OF NIEL JONKER (Artist #11)

@ 11 Granaat Ln

SHEENA RIDLEY

Sheena paints and sculpts, each medium being a tool to depict emotion and
space. In her oil paintings Sheena uses mainly the palette knife, concentrating on
stances of the people and the wonderful light our weather and country treat us
to. She applies her pastels heavily to the paper to create texture and depth to
them. Movement is something she works well with, a mere suggestion of a line
creating a flow.

Twenty years ago, Sheena began to work with cement as a sculptural medium and
has become renowned for her large idiosyncratically styled ferro-cement
sculptures. Her bronze sculptures are full of movement, defying the weight of the
medium.

Sheena lives on a farm in the Bo-Langkloof, Klein Karoo, where she has a studio gallery, the Langkloof Gallery and Sculpture Garden. She works prolifically and is collected by local and international collectors.

GUEST OF NIKKI MILES

Ateljee, 1 Kerk Str

LELI HOCH

“My inspiration is nature: earth, rocks, plants, bones, minerals, water. Natural materials and processes have and create a history, capturing on their journey new forms and meanings, the traces of life as time goes by.

In my artistic process I negotiate a path between nature art, writing, installation, crocheting, painting, knitting, sculpture and want the viewer to see or feel the hands that made a work of art.

Copper is the first metal mined and manipulated by humans. The thinnest copper wire is one of my favourite materials, interacting with other materials in a way they never would in real life.

Earth colours, all pure earth or natural pigments, mix and meld on the surface of canvas, fabric or paper, mapping the land they came from in fresh ways through the movement of a human hand – a gentle interaction between myself and the landscape.

Combining old-fashioned hand-craft techniques with a fragile material like a leaf shows the delicate nature of it. How I work highlights the balance of fragility and strength of the leaves but also makes the destructive and senseless (ab)use of nature by humans visible.

I love to explore the concepts of impermanence and decommodification, sometimes my work is ephemeral, made in situ and after completion and documentation left to disintegrate or decompose.”

Leli Hoch is the organiser and one of the selectors for the Tankwa Artscape Residency, South Africa

JANE APPLEBY

Jane Appleby is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Cape Town.

She holds a B.A Fine Art Hons (Painting) degree ,graduating Cum Laude from UCT Michaelis School of Art in 1993. Recent exhibitions include ‘Resilience ‘ group show 2022, and ‘Regroup’ group show 2019 (Gallery 196 Victoria)

"At the heart of this body of work is my fascination with the alchemy of color, foraged from my local environment . This curious investigation into materials and pigments found in the natural worlds and streets of cape town increasingly deepens my sense of place, connectedness and wonder.

I’m interested in fragility and resilience, cycles of senescence and regeneration, impermanence and interconnectedness.

I am inspired by patterns, cycles, rhythms and codes found in nature, expressed in a meditative, repetitive mark making. This sense of order is often counterbalanced with a surrender to chaos, randomness and the magic of chance.

My process involves an engagement with materials that requires a slowing down, patient distillation and embrace of unpredictability. This may be understood as a quiet rebellion in a world of consumption-driven instant gratification and rapidly advancing technology.

Essential to my practice is finding balance between disciplined attention and the freedom to play and immerse in the moment.
