GUEST ARTISTS APRIL 2025

Stuart Dods, b. 1995, painting and sculpture

Guest of Niël Jonker @ 11 Granaat Laan

Growing up in Hermanus, Stuart was inspired by the town's hardworking community, from fishermen to small business owners. He started showing his work at the Rossouw Modern Art Gallery in Hermanus, which supported him early on.

Instead of pursuing formal art education, Stuart learned by working alongside other artists. In 2015, he opened his first studio, "The Ice Factory," in Cape Town’s Bo Kaap, a space once used by artist Bastiaan van Stenis, whose work influenced Stuart’s style.

In 2018, Stuart worked with renowned artist Beezy Bailey, and they traveled together, painting across Africa, Europe, and England.

In 2023, Stuart started painting with his friend and mentor Neil Jonker, exploring new techniques and materials. He now works in Hermanus at the Church studio on Hamilton Russell Vineyards, revisiting the themes that have always inspired him.

Caroline McDowell, metalworks/sculpture

Guest of Ulriche Jantjes

@The Giant Periwinkle/Group Show

I create decorative, sculptural, and functional artworks crafted from metal. My creations range from nature-inspired laser-cut designs to custom commissions that transform personal stories and ideas into unique, bespoke pieces, including baboon-proof gates, light boxes, wall art, recycled metal sculptures, and more.

Artistically, I like to mix things up—collaborating with different artists and experimenting with a variety of materials. Collaboration and creative exploration are at the heart of my practice, so if you have a wild idea you'd love to bring to life, come say hello!

I studied Fine Art at UCT before moving to the UK in the 1980s, where I began designing and performing theatre shows. In 1991, I founded Moving Hands Theatre, a visual theatre company that combined puppetry, dance, video projection, animation, and music to create immersive storytelling experiences.

My journey into metalwork began in Pringle Bay as a response to constant baboon raids. I started by crafting bespoke gates that reflected clients personal stories and later developed a range inspired by local nature, birds, and fynbos. Over time, my work has expanded to include a wide variety of sculptural, decorative, and functional metal artworks.

Eri-kah Van Breda

Guest of Ulriche Jantjes

@The Giant Periwinkle/Group Show

Growing up on an Overberg farm surrounded by renosterveld, Eri-kah developed a deep awareness of and compassion for the Fynbos Biome’s threatened lowland ecosystems.  Her botanical fine art photography has explored the relationship between fire and fynbos photographing post-fire proteas against a backdrop of substandard tarnished oven trays.

With every image creation, she maintains a strong ancestral link by incorporating her original collection of old carbonized bake and cookware sourced from family members originating from Elim Moravian village, a 200 year old missionary station known for its export of fynbos since the late 1800’s.
@erikahvanbreda

Artists may know ‘nothing’ about fire or fynbos. Volunteer fire fighters may know ‘nothing’ about art or fynbos. Conservationist may know ‘nothing’ about art. However, together change CAN be introduced.

It is her aim to use her artwork as a vehicle to create a visual appreciation to increase awareness and knowledge of our natural heritage.

Fouché Hough

Guest of Eva Gilliam

@31 Main Rd

After working at sea for twenty years Fouché went coastal and now makes sculptures at Cape Caché.  He uses water-based resin and metallic patinas and shapes them into waves, sharks, fish. Minimalist, with textured surfaces and fluid lines. He lives in Pearly Beach with his wife and two dogs.

“I use water-based resin and metallic patinas to sculpt minimalist shapes — waves, sharks, fish, birds. Textured surfaces, clean lines. As a sailor and a man of few words I prefer to let my work speak for itself. The ocean should always be described with as few a words as possible.”
